Happy retirement-Mr. Joseph Gunayaka Nakibali
There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens.” — Ecclesiastes 3:1 (NIV)
Indeed, the season for Mr. Joseph Gunayaka Nakibali, affectionately known as Brother Joseph, at the Uganda Case Research Collaboration (UCRC), has come to a close. As he famously asked, “Gunayaka?”
“Yes,” we often replied.
Surprisingly—and perhaps divinely—sunshine often followed whenever we called upon our great ancestors and God to let the sun shine. A light, in the person of Mr. Joseph, came and shone brightly on UCRC for 35 consecutive years.
On a lovely afternoon, June 27th, 2025, we witnessed a celebration of triumph and service in honor of Brother Joseph. Flanked by his dear wife and welcomed with a standing ovation, loud claps, and ululations, Brother Joseph arrived at the event held at our Mulago campus.
Staff from across the generations he worked with gave heartwarming speeches.
Prof. Harriet Mayanja, UCRC Lead Co-PI, thanked Brother Joseph for his unwavering dedication and encouraged him to carry his passion into his new roles.
Dr. Mary Nsereko, Clinic Director, recounted his mentorship and the great work he had done with the team.
Prof. John Johnson, PI and Professor of Medicine at Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, Ohio, USA, praised Joseph’s exemplary work in home visiting and participant tracing.
All staff members expressed deep appreciation for Brother Joseph’s inspiring contributions over the years. Thoughtful gifts were presented, and the sharing of cake crowned the farewell celebration of this UCRC giant.
In his speech, Brother Joseph was overcome with joy and gratitude for the love shown by the UCRC family. He shared light-hearted moments with the team, leaving everyone with smiles and fond memories.
We thank all administration, support staff, home health visitors, clinic and laboratory staff, and drivers for making the celebration truly special.
May God guide and lead you, Brother Joseph, as you begin this new chapter. Amen.
